Can You Spot The Supporting Sentences?
Ice cream is one of the few desserts that is enjoyed all over the world! In Italy, they call ice cream gelato. Ice cream, or helado, can be found on the street corners of Argentina. The same is true in Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. Now I want to travel the world just to try out all the amazing ice cream offered in other countries!

Leading into the next topic sentence if this is an essay.
Standardized test scores prove that academic preparedness contributes to a child’s success in elementary school.

The first sentence is a topic sentence. Note how the next three supporting sentences each give details to help the reader understand why Antarctica is a dangerous and lonely place.

  1. a) A combustion engine is an engine that burns fuel to create power.
  2. b) The combustion engine replaced horses because they are more powerful and easier to maintain.
  3. c) Combustion engines allow us to travel quickly and safely in the comfort of our own cars and trucks.

Each supporting paragraph in a short essay should support points made in the thesis statement. The thesis statement acts as a road map for the rest of your essay; it defines the ideas and the order in which they will be presented. Your reader expects to see information pertaining to the subject and in the order signaled in the introduction. Moving away from the mental map you established may cause the reader to become lost in the text and miss important points
Sample Strategy for Supportive Paragraphs:

30 But they were not as alone as they imagined: we return to supportive relationships in Chapter 8.
25 He thinks we are living in a fully integrated, supportive society.
