- Be prepared to answer “So what?” about your thesis statement.
- Be prepared to explain why the point you are making is worthy of a paper. Why should the reader read it?
Compare the following:
Small cars get better fuel mileage than 4×4 pickup trucks.
Foul language is common in movies.
Example of a stronger thesis:
Most people would agree that PB&J is one of the easiest sandwiches in the American lunch repertoire.
You should keep your thesis statement in mind throughout the writing process: the main body should expand on this statement, support it with evidence, and argue for its validity.
To meet the Paris targets and mitigate the effects of climate change, the US Government should immediately begin phasing out fossil fuels and investing in renewable energies; as the world’s most powerful economy, it can take a global lead in reducing carbon emissions.
